Jaime Ferrer homers twice, Florida St. knocks out Virginia at MCWS

Jaime Ferrer hit a pair of home runs and No. 8 seed Florida State cruised to a 7-3 win over No. 12 seed Virginia, eliminating its Atlantic Coast Conference rival from the Men’s College World Series on Sunday in Omaha, Neb.

Ferrer hit a solo shot in the fourth inning to make it 2-0 and went yard again in the fifth, with a three-run homer to make it 6-0.

Alex Lodise added a solo shot that made it 7-0 Seminoles in the sixth inning before the Cavaliers managed to push across three runs down the stretch.

Carson Dorsey (8-4) scattered three runs, nine hits and two walks across seven-plus innings for Florida State (48-16). He struck out seven. Brennen Oxford got the final six outs to keep the Seminoles’ World Series dream alive.

Henry Godbout, Casey Saucke and Anthony Stephan drove in runs for Virginia (46-17), which outhit Florida State 10-7 but left nine runners on base and went 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position.

Cavaliers starter Jay Woolfolk (4-2) lasted just 3 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on three hits and three walks.

Next, Florida State plays Tuesday afternoon against the loser between Tennessee and North Carolina, who meet Sunday night.
