On Thursday, President Joe Biden of the United States of America announced that the nation’s Special Forces had annihilated a top leader of the terrorist organization Daesh, also called Islamic State or ISIS. The overnight raid took place in the early hours of Thursday, in northwestern Syria, near Idlib. This region close to the border with Turkey, is also home to Al Qaida and other terrorist groups who have set up camps in the region.
President Biden said, “Last night at my direction, U.S. military forces undertook a counterterrorism operation.” He added that they had removed “Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi– the leader of ISIS” thanks to the bravery of the nation’s armed forces. He also said that all Americans who took part in the operation had safely returned home. He said that he would announce more details, later in the day.
John Kirby, who is the Pentagon press secretary, released a statement late Wednesday that said that the mission was conducted by the US Central Command. The Central Command controls all military operations and activities that take place in the Middle East.
In November 2019, the terrorist organization, which allegedly received huge funding from several questionable sources and had mercenaries from several parts of the world including the western world, named al-Qurashi as the new leader after Al-Baghdadi was killed.
In October 2019, the U.S. had launched an operation against ISIS leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi in northern Syria. He had blown himself up along with family members, when he was cornered by U.S. forces. He was one of the most wanted terrorists in the world. He had declared a so-called Islamic caliphate that spanned parts of both Iraq and Syria and was the founder of Daesh.
The ISIS had once again gained prominence after it attacked a prison in Syria to free its members who imprisoned in a jail. Although the 10-day assault in late January was finally unsuccessful about 200 inmates and 30 security forces died in the encounter.
The ISIS is reportedly an organization with deep pockets and extreme cruelty and one that welcomes mercenaries to fight for its cause.
