On Wednesday, there was a several hours long shootout between a suspect and Allegheny County Sheriff’s deputies in the Garfield neighborhood. The deputies had gone to evict a tenant in Pittsburg after the house he occupied was sold. However, the suspect refused to leave and engaged in an almost seven-hour long shootout with the officials that finally resulted in his death.
The shooting began on Wednesday morning, according to Pittsburgh Public Safety in the 4800 block of Broad Street and North Mathilda Street. Just after 11 a.m. Public Safety urged people to avoid the area in posts on social media, and the situation was described as “extremely active.”
The Sheriff’s office said that the suspect became violent and started shooting deputies who had gone to the location to evict the tenants. The home had been sold at a sheriff’s sale. The house was owned by a person who was the suspect’s father or his brother, according to reports.
The standoff between the deputies and the suspect, later identified as William Hardison Sr., continued for several hours. At least three police drones were reportedly shot down by the suspect.
On Wednesday evening, Allegheny County Sheriff Kevin Kraus told reporters that Hardison “had a lot of ammunition in that house” and shot at officers through the walls of the first and second floors of the house.
According to a report by KDKA-TV’s Chris Hoffman a family member went to the scene to negotiate just before 3 p.m. He reportedly returned before 4 p.m., in tears. He allegedly looked devastated but didn’t speak about what had happened.
Neighbors were evacuated and expressed shock at the happenings in their quiet neighborhood. One of them also said that it appeared as if it was a movie as such occurrences are seen more in real life than real life. Family members described Hardison as a good person.
Allegheny County Sheriff said that the suspect was pronounced dead nearly seven hours after the start of the shootout. He was identified as William Hardison Sr. and was pronounced dead by medics at 5:08 p.m. One sergeant from the Allegheny County Sheriff’s office suffered a minor injury.
The White House said that President Joe Biden had been briefed about the shooting incident in Pittsburgh. No other details are currently available.
Pittsburg Safety said that 11 agencies had assisted in the shooting incident that took place at Garfield. The investigation into the Wednesday shooting incident will be led by state police who will work with county and city police as well as other agencies and offices.
