On Sunday, Frederik X became the new king of Denmark. Prime minister Mette Frederiksen proclaimed him king of the Nordic state after his mother, Queen Margrethe, signed the abdication papers. The new king appeared on the palace’s balcony and was later joined by his Australian-born wife, now called Queen Mary. Queen Margrethe will keep the title of queen, and the country will have two queens.

Vast crowds of Danes filled the streets near the palace as a famous 83-year-old monarch abdicated the throne in favor of her favorite elder son, Frederik. Christian, the 18-year-old son of Frederik and Mary, is now the crown prince of Denmark as well as the heir to the throne.

On New Year’s Eve, Queen Margrethe II announced she was stepping down as monarch, surprising the nation. Danes had expected her to rule till her death, as is the tradition in the country. She is the second monarch to step down in Denmark. She recently had surgery, and this could be the reason why she abdicated in favor of her eldest son.

The monarchy in Denmark can be traced to the tenth century as Gorm the Old became the first Viking king of the nation. He was the oldest monarch in Europe as well as one of the oldest monarchs in the world.

Many monarchs congratulated King Frederik, including King Charles III and world leaders. The late Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Margrethe II are third cousins.

Denmark had a festive air as its citizens celebrated the proclamation of a new king. Streets and shops were decorated with colorful Danish flags and portraits of the future king Frederik and Queen Margrethe.

City buses had tiny Danish flags, as is the custom for royal events. Earlier on Sunday, the royal guards’ music band wore red jackets to mark the occasion during their daily parade in Copenhagen. The historic event was televised live.
