Canada captain Alphonso Davies is unlikely to play in Thursday’s match against Qatar.

Davies, 25, is continuing to work his way back from a hamstring strain and hopes to participate in the World Cup co-hosted by his country.

The defender was ruled out of Friday’s opening 1-1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto and he remains in return-to-play protocols.

“The first game is coming up pretty quickly,” Davies said last week. “I think we understand how important the first game is. But we understand recovery is always an important thing. There’s no need to rush, just keep continuing the recovery.”

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch said at the time that an MRI showed Davies was “healing incredibly well, almost completely.”

Davies tore his ACL in national team play in March 2025 and hasn’t played for Canada since.

He returned to club play with Bayern Munich in December but subsequently sustained three hamstring and muscle strains, most recently on May 6.

Marsch opted for Davies on his 26-man roster over defenders Ralph Priso and Zorhan Bassong.
