Celebrity actress and comedian Whoopi Goldberg is known for being one of the few individuals to achieve the EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards), recently defended celebrity pop star Taylor Swift on the talk show ‘The View.’ Goldberg disagreed with a recent op-ed written by Jeffrey Ingold that suggested Swift should boycott states with anti-LGBTQ laws.
The musician received accolades over the weekend for addressing a guard mid-performance who was being aggressive towards a female fan. Web Fans think that if she would use her massive platform and the same amount of enthusiasm to condemn the unprecedented number of anti-LGBTQ+ laws being proposed around the US. Since it began in March, Swift’s Eras tour has taken her to many states, including Florida, Tennessee, and Texas, which have passed some of the most draconian anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in decades. The singer, though, has remained silent. For some, Swift’s quiet casts doubt on, or undercuts, the LGBTQ+ advocacy she started in 2019.

The op-ed, in The Guardian, criticized Swift for her silence on LGBTQ issues and called for her to take a stand against discriminatory laws. Whoopie, whose real name is Caryn Elaine Johnson, however, expressed her disagreement with the notion that artists have a responsibility to speak out or boycott such legislation.
During the discussion on ‘The View,’ Goldberg argued that performing can be an act of protest and that individuals should have the freedom to choose their own methods of activism. She emphasized that people should not dictate how others should use their platforms. Co-host Sarah Haines supported this perspective, pointing out that boycotting cities can leave marginalized communities feeling abandoned.
While the conversation on the show continued, celebrity Goldberg acknowledged that Ingold’s op-ed raised valid points and that he was using his voice to protest in his own way. She suggested that people should fight against injustice in their own ways.
It is to be noted that Ingold’s op-ed reportedly proposed various methods through which celebrity Swift could support the LGBTQ community, not solely focusing on boycotting cities. The discussion on The View highlighted the importance of the topic, and it was suggested that Ingold be invited to the show for a more in-depth conversation.
