Celebrity Matt Araiza, former Buffalo Bills punter, has announced his intention to sue attorney Dan Gilleon for defamation regarding a civil lawsuit that alleged Araiza’s involvement in a gang rape. The Bills released Araiza in August of last year after he was accused, along with two former San Diego State football teammates, of raping a 17-year-old girl near the school’s campus in 2021. The Buffalo Bills let him go after he was named a defendant in the lawsuit.
While the district attorney’s office recently concluded that Araiza was not present during the alleged gang rape, an ongoing civil lawsuit remains active. Araiza appeared in an interview and shared his plans to sue Gilleon for defamation during an interview. He stated that he has already retained an attorney and will not settle the civil lawsuit, emphasizing his determination to pursue legal action against Gilleon.

In response to Gilleon’s theory that Araiza’s location does not absolve him of liability, Araiza’s lawyer argued that the claims against him are merely an attempt to obtain financial compensation. The San Diego District Attorney’s Office concluded that Araiza could not have been involved in the alleged incident as he had left the off-campus party before it occurred. This determination was based on witness testimony and supporting evidence.
Despite the controversy surrounding him, Araiza possesses the skills to secure a spot on an National Football League (NFL) roster. Known as the “Punt God,” he won the 2021 Ray Guy Award and holds the record for average yards per punt for a season, surpassing Braden Mann’s record. The New York Jets have shown interest in Araiza, inviting him for a tryout, but he remains unsigned as of now.
If Araiza were to sign with the Jets, he would have the opportunity to face the team that drafted him twice a year. With his ability to pin opponents deep in their territory, Araiza’s talent is likely to attract attention from other teams as well.
As the celebrity NFL star Araiza prepares to sue Gilleon for defamation, he seeks to clear his name and move forward with his football career. Despite the challenges he has faced, Araiza remains determined to secure a place in the NFL and prove his worth on the field.
