ATP News: Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray in Wimbledon after surgeries

Former champions Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray were included in the Wimbledon draw released Friday despite recent surgeries.

That does not guarantee either of the 37-year-olds will be fit to compete when action gets underway Monday at the All England Club.

Serbia’s Djokovic, a seven-time winner on the grass (most recently in 2022), had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee less than a month ago. Reports from his practices this week said the 24-time Grand Slam champion looks ready to go.

Scotland’s Murray, who lifted the Wimbledon trophy in 2013 and 2016, had a cyst removed from his spinal cord last weekend. Murray said Thursday that he will wait until the last moment to decide whether he can play in singles or in doubles with his brother, Jamie.

Djokovic, the No. 2 seed, opens against Czech qualifier Vit Kopriva on Tuesday. The unseeded Murray’s first-round singles match is also scheduled for Tuesday against Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic.

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner of Italy is the No. 1 seed and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz of Spain is seeded third.

The other seeds in the top 10 are No. 4 Alexander Zverev of Germany, No. 5 Daniil Medvedev of Russia, No. 6 Andrey Rublev of Russia, No. 7 Hubert Hurkacz of Poland, No. 8 Casper Ruud of Norway, No. 9 Alex de Minaur of Australia and No. 10 Grigor Dmitrov of Bulgaria.

The highest-seeded American is Tommy Paul at No. 12.
