Wild-card entrant Martin Damm needed just 1 hour, 22 minutes to knock out No. 1 seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia 7-5, 6-3 in second-round action on Tuesday at the Winston-Salem Open in North Carolina.

The 6-foot-8 Damm used his length at the net to pull off the upset. While Medvedev won just 2 of 4 points when he was at the net, Damm won 20 of his 28 advances. Damm also never dropped his serve, saving both break points he faced.

No. 2 seed Luciano Darderi of Italy and No. 3 seed Ignacio Buse of Peru were pushed to three sets before winning their second-round matches while No. 4 seed Arthur Fery of Great Britain needed just two sets.

Belgium’s Raphael Collignon, the No. 5 seed, and Argentina’s Mariano Navone, the No. 6 seed, did not survive the second round. Australia’s Rinky Hijikata rallied to handle Collignon 3-6, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (5) while Australia’s James Duckworth dropped Navone 6-3, 7-6 (5).

Ninth-seeded Adrian Mannarino, 11th-seeded Luca Van Assche and 12th-seeded Quentin Halys, all Frenchmen, were upset in the second round by Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego, the United States’ Aleksandar Kovacevic and France’s Benjamin Bonzi, respectively. Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic, the 14th seed, fell to Dutch qualifier Mees Rottgering.

Eighth-seeded Juan Manuel Cerundolo and 10th-seeded Sebastian Baez, both of Argentina; 13th-seeded Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands; and 15th-seeded Hungarian Fabian Marozsan all earned straight-set wins to coast into the third round.
