WTA News: WTA roundup: Veronika Kudermetova saves 5 match points

No. 6 seed Veronika Kudermetova of Russia saved five match points to defeat No. 10 Danielle Collins in Thursday’s quarterfinal action at the Adelaide International 2 in Australia.

Kudermetova’s 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-1 escape set up a semifinal showdown with No. 8 Belinda Bencic of Switzerland, who took out No. 4 Caroline Garcia of France 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.

No. 9 seed Paula Badosa of Spain meets No. 5 Daria Kasatkina of Russia in the other semifinal. Badosa advanced via a 7-6 (5), 7-5 defeat of No. 11 Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil, while Kasatkina took down No. 12 Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 7-6 (3).

Unseeded Americans Sofia Kenin and Lauren Davis both booked spots in the semifinals in Hobart, Australia.

Kenin rallied past Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 and will face Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who outlasted Bernarda Pera of the U.S. 5-7, 7-6 (3), 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

Davis saved four of five break points and defeated China’s Xinyu Wan 6-3, 6-3. Up next is Russia’s Anna Blinkova, a 6-3, 6-4 winner against Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan.
