WTA News: WTA roundup: Qinwen Zheng opens with 6-0, 6-0 win in Palermo

No. 2 seed Qinwen Zheng of China needed just 58 minutes to blank Italy’s Sara Errani 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round of the 34 Palermo Ladies Open on Monday in Palermo, Italy.

Zheng, ranked No. 26 in the world, had a 4-0 edge in aces, converted six of seven break points and won 51 of the match’s total 74 points en route to the double bagel.

Clara Burel of France upset eighth seed Julia Grabher of Austria 6-4, 7-5.

Italians Camilla Rosatello and Nuria Brancaccio and France’s Diane Parry all won in straight sets.

Hungarian Grand Prix

Fifth-seeded Tatjana Maria of Germany had to rally for a 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory over Carole Monnet of France in the first round in Budapest.

Maria converted six of seven break points during a match that needed 2 hours and 35 minutes.

Similarly, No. 6 seed Elina Avanesyan of Russia came from behind to beat Slovakia’s Rebecca Sramkova 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

No. 7 seed Kamilla Rakhimova was less fortunate. The Russian was bounced in the first round, with Australia’s Astra Sharma prevailing 6-3, 6-3.

No. 8 seed Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia beat Polina Kudermetova of Russia 6-2, 6-0. American Claire Liu, Ukrainian Kateryna Baindl and Slovenian Kaja Juvan also won in straight sets.
