In a two-hour, 30-minute battle, No. 3 seed Olga Danilovic of Serbia defeated No. 5 seed Moyuka Uchijima of Japan 7-6 (9), 4-6, 6-1 in the quarterfinals of the Open Capfinances Rouen Metropole on Friday in Rouen, France.
Uchijima saved four set points in the first-set tiebreaker and served for the set at 8-7. Danilovic won that point to stay alive, failed to convert at 9-8 and finally put the set away on her sixth set point. She finished the match with a 4-1 edge in aces and a 7-for-10 success rate in saving break points.
Danilovic’s semifinal opponent will be Suzan Lamens. The Netherlands native defeated French teenager Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah 6-3, 6-3.
No. 1 seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine won in straight sets for the third consecutive round, 6-3, 6-2 over Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. Svitolina will face Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse, who swept past France’s Jessika Ponchet 6-2, 6-2.
Porsche Tennis Grand Prix
There were no matches played Friday in Stuttgart, Germany, due to a state rule prohibiting sporting events on Good Friday.
The quarterfinals will be played Saturday, the semifinals on Easter Sunday and the final on Monday. No. 1 seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus has yet to play in the event after receiving a first-round bye and a second-round walkover. She’ll face Belgium’s Elise Mertens in the quarterfinals.
