WTA News: WTA roundup: Coco Gauff wins, Marketa Vondrousova exits in Berlin

Top-seeded Coco Gauff recorded a 7-6 (6), 6-2 win over Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova in the second round at the ecotrans Ladies Open in Berlin on Thursday.

Gauff saved three set points in the first set before cruising in the second to finish the match in 80 minutes. She advanced to face eighth-seeded Ons Jabeur of Tunisia, who posted a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 victory over Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic.

Also winning Thursday were No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, No. 3 Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan and No. 4 Jessica Pegula. Sabalenka notched a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Daria Kasatkina of Russia, Rybakina secured a 6-4, 7-5 win over Veronika Kudermetova of Russia, and Pegula seized a 6-4, 7-5 triumph over Donna Vekic of Croatia.

Russian Anna Kalinskaya won her match with Marketa Vondrousova after the fifth-seeded Czech retired due to a right hip injury. Also, Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic notched a 6-4, 6-4 win over China’s Qinwen Zheng.

Rothesay Classic

Second-seeded Czech Barbora Krejcikova secured a 6-3, 6-4 win over Great Britain’s Harriet Dart in a second-round match in Birmingham, England.

Unseeded Caroline Dolehide notched a 6-3, 3-0 win over fifth-seeded Elise Mertens after the Belgian retired due to injury.

Russian Diana Shnaider seized a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over No. 8 seed Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Repiublic, while Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan coasted to a 6-3, 6-0 win over Anhelina Kalinina of the Ukraine.
