At a Sotheby’s auction set to happen this spring, a Hebrew Bible that is more than 1,000 years old could fetch up to $50 million. With that bid, the Codex Sassoon would become the most expensive historical item ever sold at auction. The first edition of the United States Constitution cost $43.2 million and was purchased by millionaire Ken Griffin in 2021.

The Codex bears the name of its former owner, businessman, philanthropist, and Judaica collector David Solomon Sassoon. It predates the Leningrad Codex, the earliest fully complete Hebrew Bible, by over a century, claims Sotheby’s. While being older than the Codex Sassoon, the Aleppo Codex in the Israel Museum has over two-fifths of its pages missing.

Early Middle-Aged academics’ observations on Masoretic spelling, reading, and accentuation conventions for the twenty-four books of the Hebrew Bible can be found in the Codex Sassoon. More than a thousand years’ worth of comments, transcriptions, commentary, and ownership records can be found in the Codex Sassoon. The latter, according to Sotheby’s, offers even more information on how Abrahamic religions evolved and expanded throughout the ancient Levant region in the Middle Ages.

The Codex Sassoon, said to be the earliest and most complete Hebrew Bible, dates from the late ninth to early tenth century. From February 22 to February 28, it will be on display at Sotheby’s in London. Afterward, an exhibition tour of Israel and the US will follow. In May, it will be put up for sale in New York where experts estimate a $30- $50 million final bid.
