Jiu Jitsu legend Leandro Lo died, on Sunday. He was fatally shot in the head, during a concert in SÄo Paulo. His shooter was allegedly an off duty policeman. Although he was taken to a hospital, he did not regain consciousness and was declared brain dead. The promising 33-year old was a shining light in jiu jitsu, in Brazil as well as in the world. Tributes poured in for the young champion, from the fighting community and from fans.
According to a report in the website MMA Fighting, the police report stated that police officer Henrique Otávio Oliveira Velozo was a suspect in the probe conducted to find Lo’s murderer. Witnesses said that the suspect grabbed a bottle from Lo’s table. So, the jiu jitsu legend took him down and held him. People separated them. Velozo allegedly got on his feet and shot Leandro Lo in the forehead.
Although the jiu jitsu fighter was taken to the Dr. Arthur Ribeiro hospital, he was declared brain dead, within a few hours after he reached the hospital. A lawyer for Leandro Lo confirmed that the legend had died after being declared brain dead.
Leandro Lo was a black belt under Cicero Costha. He was extremely successful in jiu jitsu and had won eight IBJJF championship as a black belt in the last decade. He was one of the greatest jiu jitsu black belts, ever. Earlier in 2022, he won a World Championship, in California.
The International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation described him as “one of the greatest athletes our sport has ever produced.” The federation also posted on Twitter: “An example of a true black belt, martial artist and champion on and off the mats.”
Leandro Lo’s unexpected death sent shockwaves throughout the fighting community who posted condolence messages to his family and friends.
