Geno Auriemma moved to No. 2 in all-time NCAA Division I victories among men’s and women’s college basketball coaches as No. 15 UConn routed No. 21 Creighton 73-53 on Monday in Hartford, Conn.
Auriemma logged win No. 1,203 to move past the all-time men’s leader, former Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski. The only one ahead of Auriemma is Stanford women’s coach Tara VanDerveer (1,209).
Paige Bueckers went for 24 points and six rebounds and Aaliyah Edwards had 20 points and eight boards to lead the Huskies (23-5, 15-0 Big East).
The teams were tied at 31 at intermission before UConn used a 27-10 third quarter to blow the game open. Ashlynn Shade finished with 15 points and nine rebounds and Nika Muhl tallied 11 points, six boards and seven assists for the Huskies.
Creighton (21-4, 12-3) had won 11 straight games since its first encounter with UConn, a 44-point home loss on Jan. 3. The Bluejays received 18 points from Lauren Jensen and 16 from Morgan Maly on Monday.
Illinois 86, No. 14 Indiana 66
Makira Cook scored a team-high 22 points and the Fighting Illini used an 18-2 run during the second quarter to run past the Hoosiers in Champaign, Ill.
Illinois (13-12, 7-8 Big Ten) only played six players, and all six scored in double figures: Genesis Bryant scored 15 points, Adalia McKenzie 14, Camille Hobby and Kendall Bostic 12 apiece and Gretchen Dolan 11 off the bench. Bostic added a game-high 11 rebounds.
Indiana (21-4, 12-3) endured a 1-for-9 shooting stretch over the final 7:13 of the second quarter, while Illinois made 10 of its first 11 field-goal attempts of the period. The Fighting Illini led 44-28 at halftime, and the Hoosiers could not get closer than eight points. Illinois went 17-for-18 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to seal the result.
Mackenzie Holmes scored 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting for the Hoosiers. Yarden Garzon had 17 points and eight rebounds and Sara Scalia added 10 points.
No. 13 LSU 81, Texas A&M 58
Aneesah Morrow scored 25 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as the Tigers blitzed the Aggies in College Station, Texas, for their fourth win in a row.
Flau’jae Johnson added 20 points, nine boards and six assists for LSU (22-4, 9-3 Southeastern Conference), which outscored Texas A&M 36-14 in the first half to pull away. Angel Reese finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Hailey Van Lith had 10 points.
Janiah Barker topped Texas A&M (17-8, 5-7) with 21 points and nine boards. The Aggies also got 16 points from Aicha Coulibaly and 10 from Sahara Jones en route to their second consecutive loss.
No. 19 Notre Dame 70, Duke 62
Down by three at halftime, the Fighting Irish rolled to a 21-9 advantage in the third quarter and emerged with a win at Durham, N.C.
Hannah Hidalgo paced Notre Dame (19-6, 9-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) with 23 points, four assists and four steals, and Maddy Westbeld amassed 14 points and nine rebounds. The Fighting Irish bounced back from a home loss to No. 6 North Carolina State on Thursday.
Reigan Richardson scored 23 points, Taina Mair had 12 and Jadyn Donovan put up 10 for the Blue Devils (16-9, 8-6), who have lost two straight after a three-game winning streak.
