Women’s Top 25 roundup: No. 10 Iowa State beats Kansas at buzzer

Kenzie Hare swished a 3-pointer from the left corner as time expired to give No. 10 Iowa State a 79-76 victory over Kansas on Sunday afternoon in the Big 12 opener for both teams at Ames, Iowa.

Kansas knotted the score at 76 on a basket by S’Mya Nichols with 5.2 seconds left. On Iowa State’s final possession, Hare received a pass from Addy Brown and made the game-ending shot for her only points of the game.

Cyclones star Audi Crooks had 41 points on 19-of-28 shooting for her third 40-point effort of the season for the Cyclones (13-0, 1-0 Big 12). Brown added 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists, and Jada Williams added 11 points and 10 assists for Iowa State.

Nichols had 29 points, seven assists and five rebounds for the Jayhawks (10-3, 0-1). Libby Fandel added 18 points and sank four treys as Kansas went 12-of-21 from behind the arc.

No. 2 Texas 70, South Dakota State 51

Jordan Lee scored 17 points and Madison Booker added 14 points and nine rebounds as the Longhorns beat the Jackrabbits at Brookings, S.D.

Rori Harmon added 11 points and seven assists for Texas (14-0), which committed 11 turnovers and forced 23. The trip to South Dakota was just the second true road game of the season for the Longhorns.

Brooklyn Meyer scored 20 points for South Dakota State (10-4), which lost its second straight game. Mahli Abdouch had 10 points for the Jackrabbits but also committed 11 turnovers.

No. 5 LSU 110, UT Arlington 45

Grace Knox recorded 25 points, 12 rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots and fellow reserve MiLaysia Fulwiley had 23 points, five steals and four blocked shots as the Tigers routed the Mavericks at Baton Rouge, La.

Amiya Joyner added 14 points and 11 rebounds and Flau’jae Johnson also scored 14 points as LSU (13-0) cruised to the victory. The Tigers held a 62-29 rebounding advantage and racked up 19 steals and 11 blocked shots.

Kira Reynolds and Kendal Robinson scored seven points apiece for UT Arlington (6-6), who have lost two of their past three games. The Mavericks shot 23.1% from the field and committed 34 turnovers.

No. 6 Michigan 97, Oakland 54

Olivia Olson scored 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting to help the Wolverines rout the Golden Grizzlies at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Syla Swords added 18 points as Michigan (10-1) built a 27-point halftime lead while cruising to its sixth straight victory. Brooke Quarles Daniels had 11 points, and Ashley Sofilkanich and Te’Yala Delfosse added 10 points apiece.

Lianna Baxter had 14 points for Oakland (3-9), which committed 27 turnovers while losing for the fifth straight time. Makenzie Luehring and Angie Smith added 13 points apiece for the Golden Grizzlies.

No. 14 Ole Miss 86, Old Dominion 57

The Monarchs led by two points in the game’s first minute before the Rebels took over to advance to the finals of the Cherokee Invitational against No. 14 Michigan State on Monday in Cherokee, N.C.

Christeen Iwuala posted a double-double with game highs of 23 points and 10 rebounds for Ole Miss (12-1). Cotie McMahan added 19 points and seven boards, and Latasha Lattimore had 15 points and six rebounds as the Rebels ruled the glass 40-25.

Old Dominion (7-5) was outscored 22-11 in the first quarter and 29-10 in the final quarter while playing close in the middle periods. En’Dya Buford had 20 points and Riley Slack 12 for the Monarchs.

Texas Tech 61, No. 15 Baylor 60

Bailey Maupin sank two foul shots with 3.4 seconds left to lift the undefeated Lady Raiders past the Bears in the Big 12 opener for both teams in Waco, Texas.

Baylor (11-3) led 60-57 on Yuting Deng’s 3-pointer with 53.7 seconds left in regulation. Snudda Collins, who finished with 21 points, brought Texas Tech (14-0) within 60-59 on two free throws with 39.6 ticks remaining. After Maupin’s clutch shots after she was fouled driving the baseline, Deng (game-high 22 points off the bench) missed a 5-foot jumper at the buzzer.

The Lady Raiders had not beaten the Bears in the previous 31 meetings dating to 2011 and also snapped an 11-game skid against ranked teams.

No. 18 North Carolina 93, Charleston Southern 74

Nyla Brooks made six 3-pointers and scored 19 points off the bench to help the Tar Heels cruise to the win over the Buccaneers at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Elina Aarnisalo added 16 points, and Indya Nivar had 14 points and six assists for North Carolina (11-3). The Tar Heels held a 46-21 rebounding advantage, including a 17-2 edge on the offensive boards.

Tyonna Bailey had 31 points and nine rebounds off the bench for Charleston Southern (2-10). Caelan Ellis made five 3-pointers and scored 18 points for the Buccaneers, who lost their fourth consecutive game.

No. 19 Southern California 61, California 57

The Trojans made five of eight free throws in the final minute to hold off the Golden Bears in the Bay Area Women’s Classic in San Francisco.

Freshman Jazzy Davidson topped Southern California (9-3) with a season-high 24 points along with a team-high four blocks. Kara Dunn contributed 15 points and Kennedy Smith had 11.

California (8-5), which led by as many as nine points and was up 45-43 after three quarters, was outscored 18-12 in the final period. Sakima Walker recorded a double-double with a team-high 13 points and game-high 10 rebounds. Taylor Barnes and Lulu Twidale produced 11 points each.

No. 20 Notre Dame 110, Bellarmine 38

Hannah Hildago posted her second career triple-double as the Fighting Irish crushed the Knights with the 72-point victory in South Bend, Ind.

Hidalgo, who also had a triple-double in 2023, recorded 30 points, 13 steals and 10 assists in 22 minutes. She passed Arike Ogunbowale with her 12th 30-point contest, the most in program history.

Notre Dame (9-2) also got double-digit points from five other players, including 20 from Cassandre Prosper, who had a game-high 14 boards. Gisela Sanchez had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Bellarmine (2-11) was outrebounded 48-34 and on the wrong end with 33 turnovers to seven for the Irish. Rose Jamison scored 17 points in a losing cause.

No. 22 Washington 90, Pacific 50

The Huskies scored at least 20 points in each quarter and never trailed in building a 40-point victory over the host Tigers in Stockton, Calif.

Sierra Harvey scored a career-high 22 points off the bench for Washington (10-2), with starters Sayvia Sellers (14 points) and Avery Howell (11) also reaching double figures.

Pacific (5-6) made just 2 of 17 on 3-point attempts and was 2 of 4 at the free-throw line, while the Huskies were 12 of 25 and 10 of 13 in those categories. Winner Bartholomew was the lone Tiger in double figures with 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field.

No. 23 Nebraska 87, Cal Baptist 56

Jessica Petrie scored 17 points, Amiah Hargrove added 15 and the Cornhuskers started 12-0 for the third time in school history with the victory over the Lancers at Lincoln, Neb.

Britt Prince added 11 points and Callin Hake had 10 for Nebraska, which outscored Cal Baptist by 22 points in the final quarter. Sunday’s win matched the second-longest winning streak in program history.

Lauren Olson had 17 points, eight rebounds and four steals for the Lancers (6-7). Emma Johansson added 13 points for Cal Baptist, which dropped its sixth straight game.

No. 24 Michigan State 115, Indiana State 66

Emma Shumate matched her career high with 22 points and set a personal mark with seven 3-pointers as the Spartans knocked off the Sycamores in the semifinals of the Cherokee Invitational in Cherokee, N.C.

Seven players for Michigan State (10-1) scored in double figures, including Kennedy Blair (11), who also pulled down a game-high 10 boards. Grace VanSlooten had 12 points in nine minutes, while Isaline Alexander (15 points), Sara Sambolic (14), Jalyn Brown (13) and Rashunda Jones (10) also reached double digits.

Indiana State (4-6) actually outscored the Spartans 28-25 in the second quarter but otherwise could not keep pace. Jayci Allen (13 points) and Kennedy Claybrooks (10) were its top scorers.
