Loyal McQueen scored 18 points and Mia Moore tallied nine of her 14 in a dominant third quarter as host Clemson knocked off No. 20 Cal 69-58 in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup on Thursday night.
Cal led by two on Ugonne Onyiah’s jumper with 7:46 to play in the third, but the Tigers (9-5, 2-1 ACC) responded with a 7-0 run. Minutes later, Clemson began a quarter-closing 12-0 burst to lead 61-46 going into the fourth. Moore scored the first seven points of the latter spree.
Ioanna Krimili paced the Golden Bears (13-2, 1-1) with 18 points. Ugonne added 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Marta Suarez chipped in 12 points as Cal’s seven-game winning streak ended.
Tessa Miller scored 11 points and Raven Thompson notched 10 for Clemson, which turned 15 turnovers by Cal into 23 points.
No. 2 South Carolina 83, Missouri 52
The Gamecocks dominated the second half while putting away the Tigers as the teams opened Southeastern Conference play in Columbia, Mo.
MiLaysia Fulwiley scored 14 of her team-high 17 points after intermission as South Carolina broke away from a lead that was only 10 at halftime. Ashlyn Watkins finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds, Te-Hina Paopao also scored 11 points and Tessa Johnson chipped in 10 for South Carolina (13-1, 1-0 SEC).
Ashton Judd had 15 points and six rebounds for Missouri (11-5, 0-1). Grace Slaughter added 13 points.
No. 5 Texas 80, No. 9 Oklahoma 73
Jordan Lee scored nine of her 17 points in the second quarter as the Longhorns built a lead and hung on to beat the Sooners in the teams’ SEC opener at Norman, Okla.
Oklahoma (12-2, 0-1) led 26-17 after one quarter, but Texas (14-1, 1-0) compiled a 23-13 advantage in the second to take a one-point lead into halftime. The lead changed hands four times late in the third quarter before the game was tied 60-60 entering the fourth.
Taylor Jones had two baskets in a 6-0 Texas run to start the fourth, and the Sooners never caught up. Rori Harmon had 16 points and eight rebounds for the Longhorns, and Jones had 14 points. Oklahoma got 23 points from Payton Verhulst and 14 from Liz Scott.
No. 6 LSU 98, Arkansas 64
Flau’Jae Johnson (15 points, 10 rebounds) and Aneesah Morrow (11 points, 10 boards) each had a double-double as the Tigers blitzed the Razorbacks in the SEC opener for both teams at Fayetteville. Ark.
Kailyn Gilbert topped LSU (16-0, 1-0 SEC) with 16 points, and Mikaylah Williams scored 14.
Izzy Higginbottom produced 27 points for Arkansas (7-9, 0-1), and Carly Keats had 18. The Razorbacks were outrebounded 48-32.
No. 8 Maryland 78, Rutgers 61
Shyanne Sellers posted season bests of 22 points and eight rebounds while leading the Terrapins to a victory over the Scarlet Knights in College Park, Md.
Allie Kubek added 17 points and Kaylene Smikle contributed 13 for Maryland (13-0, 3-0 Big Ten). The Terrapins blew the game open with a 21-9 second quarter.
Destiny Adams scored 15 points and Kiyomi McMiller had 14 for Rutgers (8-6, 0-3). The Scarlet Knights outshot the Terrapins 35.5 percent to 34.8 percent from the floor, but Maryland had a 27-10 scoring edge from the foul line.
No. 13 Georgia Tech 85, Syracuse 68
Freshman Dani Carnegie came off the bench to score a career-high 28 points as the undefeated Yellow Jackets downed the Orange in Atlanta.
Carnegie hit 11 of 18 shots from the floor, including 6 of 8 from 3-point range, for Georgia Tech (15-0, 3-0 ACC). Zoesha Smith added 16 points and 12 rebounds, Tonie Morgan scored 15 points and Kara Dunn logged 14 points and eight boards.
Georgia Woolley paced Syracuse (6-7, 0-2) with 22 points. Kyra Wood finished with 12 points as the Orange’s two-game winning streak ended.
No. 14 Duke 86, Boston College 59
A 19-2 second-quarter scoring explosion carried the Blue Devils past the Eagles in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
Ashlon Jackson, Taina Mair and Reigan Richardson each scored 14 points for Duke (11-3, 2-0 ACC). The Blue Devils also got double-figure contributions from reserves Oluchi Okananwa (12 points) and Toby Fournier (11 points) while bouncing back from a loss to South Florida.
Dontavia Waggoner put up a season-high 20 points for Boston College (10-6, 1-2). The Eagles were outshot 52.4 percent to 34.4 percent from the field.
No. 15 Tennessee 91, Texas A&M 78
Jewel Spear sank 6 of 8 3-point attempts and scored 20 points to power the Lady Volunteers past the Aggies in College Station, Texas.
Tennessee (13-0, 1-0 SEC) cruised in the conference opener, also getting 16 points from Talaysia Cooper, 15 from Ruby Whitehorn and 14 from Zee Spearman.
Aicha Coulibaly registered 20 points and three blocks for Texas A&M (7-6, 0-1). Sahara Jones scored 17 points and Janae Kent had 10.
No. 16 Kentucky 91, Mississippi State 69
Dazia Lawrence and Georgia Amoore each hit seven of the Wildcats’ program-record 18 3-pointers, leading Kentucky to a rout of the Bulldogs in Lexington, Ky.
Lawrence finished with 28 points while Amoore had 27 points and nine assists as the Wildcats (12-1, 1-0 SEC) earned their fifth win in a row. Amelia Hassett hit three 3-pointers and wound up with 14 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
Jerkaila Jordan scored 17 points, Eniya Russell and Quanirah Montague each had 13 and Destiney McPhaul put up 10 for Mississippi State (13-2, 0-1). The Bulldogs had a five-game winning streak end.
No. 19 Alabama 79, Florida 69
Zaay Green scored 27 points and the Crimson Tide jumped on the Gators early and led by double digits most of the way in the Southeastern Conference opener for each team in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Green went 12 of 22 from the floor and added six assists and four rebounds. Diana Collins chipped in 12 points, Aaliyah Nye had 10 and Essence Cody supplied nine points, 11 rebounds and three blocks for Alabama (14-1, 1-0 SEC).
Liv McGill led Florida (9-6, 0-1) with 18 points. Alexia Gassett and Jeriah Warren netted 12 apiece and Ra Shaya Kyle added 11 points and 13 boards. Kyle’s three-point play pulled the Gators within 76-68 with 2:30 to play, but they missed their last two shots and got no closer.
No. 25 Ole Miss 85, Auburn 58
KK Deans and Kennedy Todd-Williams set season highs with 20 and 19 points, respectively, as the Rebels clobbered the host Tigers in the Southeastern Conference opener for both squads.
Ole Miss (10-3, 1-0 SEC) shot 64.3 percent in the first quarter and took a 26-10 lead into the second. The Rebels padded their lead to 45-20 by halftime. Sira Thienou finished with 12 points and Tameiya Sadler 10 for the visitors.
DeYona Gaston, who began the night seventh in Division I in scoring at 22.7 points per game, netted 30 points on 8-of-15 shooting for Auburn (9-5, 0-1). The Tigers committed 29 turnovers, which the Rebels converted into 37 points.
