Sarah Te-Biasu scored 26 points and made a steal in the final seconds to lift No. 4 seed Maryland to a 111-108 double-overtime win over No. 5 seed Alabama on Monday evening in College Park, Md.
Shyanne Sellers finished with a team-high 28 points for Maryland (25-7), which advanced to the Sweet 16 in the Birmingham 2 regional. The Terrapins will face No. 1 seed South Carolina on Friday.
Sarah Ashlee Barker scored 45 points on 17-for-25 shooting from the field for Alabama (24-9). Essence Cody added 18 points and a game-high five steals for the Crimson Tide.
The score was tied at 83-all at the end of regulation and 96-all at the end of the first overtime. Maryland outscored Alabama 15-12 in the second overtime to earn the victory.
Te-Biasu drained a 3-pointer to open the scoring in the second overtime and put Maryland ahead to stay. Barker’s jumper cut Alabama’s deficit to 109-108 with 16 seconds left, but Sellers sank two free throws. Diana Collins missed a game-tying 3-pointer, then Te-Biasu intercepted Karly Weathers’ pass moments before the buzzer sounded.
No. 1 Texas 65, No. 8 Illinois 48
Madison Booker scored a game-high 20 points and reserve Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda added 19 as the Longhorns cruised past the Illini in a second-round matchup in Austin, Texas.
Taylor Jones chipped in 12 points for the Longhorns (33-3), which advanced to the Sweet 16 on Saturday for a matchup with fifth-seeded Tennessee. Texas hit 46.7 percent of its shots from the field and enjoyed a 36-18 advantage in points in the paint.
Adalia McKenzie scored 13 points for the Fighting Illini (22-10) and Berry Wallace added 12 but they couldn’t do much with the Longhorns’ tough defense. Illinois made only 16 of 42 shots from the field and coughed up 20 turnovers that were turned into 23 points.
No. 3 North Carolina 58, No. 6 West Virginia 47
Alyssa Ustby scored 21 points on 7-for-11 shooting and the Tar Heels held on to beat the Mountaineers in a low-scoring battle in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Reniya Kelly and Lexi Donarski added 11 points apiece for North Carolina (29-7). Indya Nivar added a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with six points for the Tar Heels, who advanced to face rival No. 2 Duke in the Sweet 16.
Jordan Harrison scored 10 points to lead West Virginia (25-8). Kyah Watson finished with nine points and 15 rebounds.
The Tar Heels outscored the Mountaineers 24-21 in the first half. West Virginia took a 35-33 lead in the third quarter thanks to an 8-0 run capped by two free throws from Sydney Woodley, but North Carolina responded with an immediate 9-0 surge that included a go-ahead 3-pointer by Donarski.
The Mountaineers never caught up again, trailing by at least seven throughout the fourth quarter.
