After a fifth consecutive losing season, the Washington Wizards fired general manager Tommy Sheppard on Wednesday.
Washington will begin its search to fill the role immediately and plans on making a hire from outside the organization.
“Failure to make the playoffs the last two seasons was very disappointing to our organization and our fans,” Wizards owner Ted Leonsis said in a statement. “I would like to thank Tommy for his dedication to the Wizards organization and wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
Sheppard, 53, had been with Washington since 2003, but took over as GM ahead of the 2019-20 season.
Over the past four seasons, the Wizards have gone 129-179. They made the playoffs once during that span, losing 4-1 to the Philadelphia 76ers in a first-round Eastern Conference playoff series in 2021.
Washington went 35-47 this past season, finishing 12th in the Eastern Conference.
