A Wisconsin woman has been detained on attempted first-degree intentional homicide charges after allegedly poisoning her husband on multiple occasions with animal euthanasia drugs. On December 28, 50-year-old Amanda Chapin was charged in Lafayette County. According to reports, she poisoned Gary Chapin, her 70-year-old husband, three times in July and August by adding barbiturates to his coffee.
The couple married in March, and according to a criminal complaint, Chapin forged the signature of one of her husband’s children on a power of attorney document after the wedding.
According to the criminal complaint, Chapin then demanded that her husband changed the deed to the house so that she could inherit it if he died. She poisoned her spouse for the first time with animal-killing drugs less than three weeks after the quit claim deed on the house was authorized, the complaint stated.
When her husband ingested the toxin for the third time in August, he went into a four-day coma. A blood test revealed that the barbiturates in his bloodstream were the same drugs used to euthanize animals.
According to online court records, Gary Chapin’s son filed a restraining order against his father’s new wife on his father’s behalf following the heinous act. According to reports, she violated the restraining order in September when she emailed her spouse a suicide note in which she stated that she wanted to kill herself because his children would destroy her. In the letter, she also denied ever poisoning him.
It is unclear how Amanda attempted suicide, but she survived after paramedics took her to a nearby hospital. The next day, her husband filed for divorce. Amanda Chapin’s attorney, Adam Witt, stated that she denies the allegations.
