Amazon founder Jeff Bezos commissioned a super yacht to be built by Oceano shipyard in Alblasserdam in The Netherlands. However, due to its huge size, a historic bridge in Rotterdam, called De Hef locally, will have to be temporarily dismantled for the sailing boat to pass through. This has angered local residents who have started a campaign to throw rotten eggs as the sailing vessel crosses over.
Pablo Strormann, a local resident, has posted an event on Facebook asking “all Rotterdammers” to throw rotten eggs “en masse” as the ship will sail through the bridge, in summer. The event also has a link to a video tutorial. It teaches a person to make a “cardboard egg grenade launcher” on the page for “advanced egg throwers.”
The yacht’s height is 417 feet which is equivalent to 127 meters. In order to reach the ocean, Y721 has to cross the Koningshavenburg bridge. Generally ships pass through the 130 feet bridge before their masts are assembled. However, the shipyard and its owner are unable or unwilling, depending on your viewpoint, to lower the mast before passing or to let a partially constructed Y721 pass through the iconic bridge.

So, the iconic bridge will be partly dismantled to allow an individual billionaire’s huge ship to pass through as he is willing to foot the bill, despite protests from locals and historians. The local council has given permission for dismantling the bridge.
Experts say that when individuals try to build or get someone to build bigger than normal, with this action, they might be trying to overcompensate for something missing in their lives. Mr. Strorman said that Rotterdam was built from the rubble by its people and they “don’t just take that apart for the phallus symbol of a megalomaniac billionaire. Not without a fight.”
Jeff Bezos, the owner of the yacht, is the second richest man in the world, after Elon Musk of Tesla. He is also the founder of Blue Origin, which was the second private space company to take humans to space after Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic. Will he be the first to get egg on his face as Y721 crosses Rotterdam is if he goes onboard as Y721 makes its maiden voyage into the ocean? It remains to be seen!
