It has been announced by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) that the 79th Annual Golden Globe Awards will be hosted. It will be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, in Los Angeles, California, on Sunday January 9. Although it is being held at its traditional venue, the event will be different this time due to the pandemic as well as controversies that have being dodging the Globes from several months.
In an exclusive, Variety said that it had got a copy of an email from the talent booker of the Globes. It had been sent to publicity agencies inquiring whether their clients would take part in the show. Sources said that no one had agreed to take part, as yet.
Earlier in May, NBC said that it would not broadcast the awards ceremony, in 2022, after a huge backlash that resulted after an expose from the Los Angeles Times. The outlet had reported that there were zero Black members among the 87 international journalists who choose the nominees of the Golden Globes, every year. As of now, no other broadcaster or streamer had said that there would be a live telecast.
The HFPA faced boycotts and more after the release of the report. Tom Cruise returned the three Golden Globes that he had received. The HFPA made changes and revisions to become more inclusive after facing outrage from the film fraternity. It added 21 new members. They are from diverse backgrounds and are “first-time Golden Globe voters.”
The HFPA has released few details about the 79th Annual Golden Globe Awards to be held on January 9, 2022. They include the following:
The awards will not be a “celebrity-driven event” as it was in the past.
There will be no audience or nominees in attendance.
Select members and grantees will be in the room during the announcement of the awards.
Attendees should be double vaccinated, with a booster shot and negative PCR test within 48 hours of the event.
Mask wearing is mandatory and social distancing will be maintained.
There will be no red carpet.
Media has not been invited.
PEOPLE said that it will publish a detailed list of winners after the ceremony, when they get the relevant information.
