A recent report by a popular outlet said that ex FTX Ryan Salame is in talks with federal prosecutors and may take a plea deal. The sources who are familiar with the matter said that this deal could happen next month as talks are on. Salame might plead guilty to criminal charges that could be related to the massive collapse of the crypto exchange FTX last November.
Sources told Bloomberg that the former co-CEO may plead guilty to criminal charges relating to breaking laws of campaign funding. Salame was in charge of political contributions made by FTX. However, there is no knowledge about whether he will assist the prosecutors in the addition of similar charges to Sam Bankman-Fried, the former CEO and co-founder of FTX.
On Tuesday, prosecutors said in a letter that they would continue to claim that Bankman-Fried had taken part in “illegal campaign finance” at his scheduled October trial where he is facing other criminal charges. Sam Bankman-Fried pleaded not guilty to the criminal charges connected to the downfall of FTX, unlike many other senior executives.
Earlier, several senior FTX and Alameda Research executives including Gary Wang, Nishad Singh and Caroline Ellison had pleaded guilty to criminal charges laid on them and were also reportedly cooperating with the prosecutors.
Last month, federal prosecutors began investigations into violations of financial laws in congressional political campaigns including those of Salame’s girlfriend, Michelle Bond last year, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. Salame had potentially illegally avoided federal limits on her campaign. Following this source say Salame, a prominent Republican donor could plead guilty and might cut a deal with the prosecutors, as he was also in charge of political donations at FTX.
The collapse of FTX was a major upheaval for the crypto industry and lead to a collapse of other exchanges. Founder and CEO Sam Bankman-Fried’s trial is expected to have witnesses including former executives. However, it is not confirmed as to whom will testify against Bankman-Fried, who is currently under house arrest in his parents’ home in Palo Alto, California.
