Although Elon Musk teased about both batteries powered electric planes and boats at Tesla’s Investor Day (TSLA) held on March 1, don’t hold your breath as it could be a long way to an electric plane or boat. The third part of the electric vehicle maker’s Master Plan included the complete transformation of all modes of transport through electric vehicles.
During the presentation Elon Musk said, “All cars will go to fully electric and autonomous.”
Tesla’s goal includes a new manufacturing platform whose goal is to halve manufacturing costs. With a 50 percent reduction in price, the EV maker thinks that electric vehicles will become popular with the masses. Most people don’t buy electric vehicles because of their high cost.
In the live streamed event, the company and its CEO also revealed more ambitious plans that included boats and planes that would be powered with batteries in the future.
Drew Baglino, who is SVP, Power Train and Energy Engineering at Tesla took to the stage and said, “A necessary part of the pie is sustainably fueling planes and boats.” The SVP also said that three percent of the global CO2 was emitted by the shipping industry.
Baglino mentioned that the maritime industry was the correct one for electrification, even through the use of lithium ion and phosphate. He considered electrifying long-haul ships with battery power to be a “great opportunity.”
The Tesla SVP continued on similar lines for airplanes but admitted that energy density was a little “harder” when considering battery powered planes for long hauls though it could be “doable” as of now for short hauls.
Elon Musk spoke of the large amount of work that was being done to leverage sustainable aviation fuels produced and stored using excess renewable energy. He also spoke of redesigning ships and planes that would have electric batteries. However, Musk did not mention whether Tesla would build planes and boats that are battery powered.
