Will Disney Hulu Plus Live TV with Fubo Merger Take On Alphabet YouTube TV? CWEB analyzes

Alphabet’s YouTube TV is the market leader, with over 8 million web fans subscribing to its services. However, on Monday, Walt Disney Co. (DIS) announced that it will merge its streaming video service, Hulu, with Live TV with a strong competitor, Fubo. This news by both entertainment companies has surprised many in the streaming industry and could provide some competition for market leader YouTube TV.

On Monday, Walt Disney Co. and Fubo announced that there would be a merger between the two virtual video providers, making the joint venture a bigger player in the multichannel video provider (vMVPD) space. CWEB analyzes that YouTube TV has been the dominant player in this space and will remain so but could finally face strong competition.

The new company will continue to trade under Fubo publicly. Disney will have a 70 percent stake in the company and appoint most board members. However, co-founder and CEO David Gandler of Fubo and his team will run the new venture.

The deal is expected to take between a year and a year and a half to be completed. The new company will have several offers for its web fans. They can subscribe to both Hulu + Live TV and Fubo under distinct brands, and Hulu will continue to be available with the larger Disney bundle. Fubo will negotiate its carrier deals independently of Disney.

The new deal between Disney and Fubo will end the legal action taken by Fubo against the Venu sports streaming service.

Fubo CEO David Gander said that Fubo would “deliver flexible, innovative and competitive content packages to consumers, particularly around sports.

CWEB thinks that the new venture will offer more flexibility and a variety of packages that will ultimately benefit web fans.
