New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez has been found guilty of 16 counts leveled against him but has not as yet resigned. He continues to plead innocence. Despite receiving a guilty verdict on all counts, including being the first senator to be convicted of acting as a foreign agent, the seasoned senator with a four-decade political career who got the moniker gold bar senator after hundreds of bars were found in his home, remains defiant and will appeal the verdict.

A jury in New York deliberated for about 13 hours over three days and returned with the guilty verdict for the senator.

Two co-defendants Wael Hana and Fred Daibes were also convicted of all counts, while a third pleaded guilty. Bob Menendez’s wife, Nadine’s hearing, has been delayed for an indefinite period as she is suffering from cancer and has undergone surgery.

Senator Bob Menendez said he was “deeply disappointed” with the jury’s decision as he continued to maintain his innocence. He said he had “never, ever been a foreign agent” and more.

He was also found guilty of accepting gold and cash as bribes from three businessmen from New Jersey. He was accused of accepting these bribes to benefit governments in Egypt and Qatar.

Bob Menendez faced 16 counts, such as bribery, extortion, and acting as a foreign agent. He also faced charges of obstruction of justice and several counts of conspiracy.

Bob Menendez has not answered when asked if he would resign, but many Democrats, including Chuck Schumer and Cory Bush, have asked him to step down.

Governor Phil Murphy has urged the Senate to proceed with an expulsion if he continues to defy his party and refuses to step down. He is running for reelection and has registered as an Independent for the 2024 elections.

Bob Menendez’s sentencing has been scheduled for October 29. He could face decades in prison.
