Apple is expected to launch its iPhone 15 in September. As Apple users wait for new features in the next generation model, one important upgrade might be a new charging port. This port is expected to be a USB-C connector. Adding a generic charging port would be good for consumers as well as the environment as non-generic charges fill landfills as well as become inconvenient when a consumer needs to charge a device but can only use a specific cable for a specific port.
Apple has been using a proprietary port called the Lightning port. It is placed at the bottom of iPhones since 2012. However, the tech giant is expected to add a USB-C port at the bottom of the iPhone 15 as a new European Union (EU) regulation expects new smartphones to be compliant with USB-C in 2024.
Apple is not expected to make European specific iPhones. So, experts believe that the iPhone 15 will be compliant with the new EU regulation.
In 2022, Greg Joswiak, who is the chief marketer at Apple said on social media, “We will have to comply [with the EU regulation] …but it would have been better not to have a government be that prescriptive.”
The European Union estimated that the new regulation passed by the EU last year would save Europeans about $250 million euros each year. It also noted that smartphones that have a USB-C port would be environmentally friendly as older chargers that are discarded by consumers add about 11,000 tons of e-waste in the EU, each year.
Consumers can also borrow chargers, if necessary, that don’t have to be specifically designed to be used for Apple devices. The USB-C port has been almost universally adopted port by all tech companies except Apple, to date.
Apple had argued against the EU regulation saying that it would stifle innovation and more. Critics thought that the Cupertino giant was looking at its bottom line as consumers would no longer need to buy specific cables and chargers. However, the EU regulation is coming into force in 2024 and USB-C in most if not all devices is convenient for both the consumer and will also decrease e-waste.
