Paralympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius, who is serving a sentence for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp 10 years ago, was denied parole on Friday. Pistorius will need to continue until a subsequent parole hearing in August 2024. Steenkamp’s parents, who had opposed an early release, applauded the parole board’s decision, their attorney said.
According to South African legislation, prisoners who maintain excellent prison behavior may be eligible for parole after serving half of their sentence. In 2013, the former sprinter denied killing his girlfriend in a fit of rage and claimed instead that he had thought she was an intruder when he shot her four times through the bathroom door.
The South African is serving a term of 13 years and 5 months, and at half-time applied for parole. Singabakho Nxumalo, a spokesperson for South Africa’s Correctional Services, revealed that Pistorius’ request for parole was denied because he was not yet qualified, a situation that had just this week been clarified by the nation’s highest appeals court.
Pistorius was required to take part in South Africa’s “Restorative Justice” process to be eligible for parole. Pistorius entered a not-guilty plea to the murder charge and the firearms allegation related to the murder during the trial. The shooting allegedly took place after the pair quarreled, according to the prosecution, who claimed that her death was premeditated.

In 2014, Pistorius was found guilty of murder and given a five-year prison term. However, a higher court overturned the verdict, and the charge was upgraded to murder, increasing his prison term to six years. Prosecutors appealed the decision because they thought the punishment was too light. In 2017, Pistorius’ punishment was lengthened by South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal to 13 years and five months, reports said.
The six-time Paralympic gold medalist voiced his sincere regret for shooting and killing his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day in 2013, but he still stands by his claim that he mistook her for a robber at the time.
Due to the innovative prosthetic legs, he used in both the Paralympic and Olympic track events, the man was once known as “the Blade Runner,” and his televised trial received enormous international notice. Now, it appears probable that he will not get the chance to leave jail before August 2024.
