CVS Health Corp. (CVS) has the dubious distinction of having the most generic drugs recalled for multiple reasons. Although competitors such as Walgreens have also faced recalls, the sheer number—reportedly 133—of branded drugs from CVS is the highest ever in the US. The Food and Drug Administration recalls drugs for various reasons. CWEB reports on some of the reasons for the CVS drug recall.
Reports from Bloomberg say that one factory in Florida, Unipharma LLC, made cherry-flavored medication for pain and fever under the CVS brand using contaminated water. It has closed operations since. A factory in India that was making allergy drugs under the pharmaceutical giant’s brand was contaminated with harmful microorganisms found in the unit. It also had other infarctions and did not respond when asked for comment.
Another factory increased the potency of children’s medicines. Another factory made nasal sprays for babies using the same machines that were used to produce pesticides. In October, a factory in China that made burn cream for home first aid kits sold by CVS was banned as there was a risk of contamination by microbes.
The FDA says the drugmaker has the legal responsibility for approving or rejecting drugs outsourced for production. Therefore, store-branded medicines have a loophole, as these private-label manufacturers outsource the production to manufacturers responsible for the quality. Americans using these cheaper brands to save a few bucks sometimes get affected due to the fall in quality control.
Reporters Anne Edney and Peter Robison said, “Over the last decade, CVS hired at least 15 manufacturers that were cited for manufacturing problems, more than twice as many as its largest rival, Walgreens.”
They added, “This led to 133 recalls of CVS store-brand drugs—an average of more than one a month—in that time frame for pediatric and adult medications according to a Bloomberg news review of FDA data.”
Bloomberg also reported that Walgreens had 70 recalls while Walmart had 51 recalls over the same period.
