CWEB reports that Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis resigned on Monday, just one day before facing an impeachment vote. Iohannis, who had previously stated his intention to remain in office until the presidential elections in May, stepped down amid growing opposition to his recent political decisions and widespread public protests.
The resignation comes after months of political instability in Romania. In December 2024, the country’s top court annulled the presidential runoff election just 48 hours before citizens were set to cast their votes. This decision left Romania without an incoming president and fueled public anger. Iohannis had pledged to stay in office until the May elections, citing national security concerns, but his indecisiveness and handling of the crisis further eroded his popularity.
On Monday, hundreds of protesters gathered in the capital, Bucharest, demanding his resignation. In his resignation statement, Iohannis explained that he stepped down to prevent further division and damage to the country, calling the impending impeachment vote “divisive and damaging” for Romania.
With Iohannis’s departure, Senate president and liberal leader Ilie Bolojan will serve as interim president until fresh elections are held in May.
Iohannis, a centrist and pro-EU leader, had been a prominent figure in Romanian politics but faced significant backlash in recent months. Thousands of Romanians took to the streets, viewing his actions as undemocratic and out of touch with public sentiment.
As Romania prepares for the upcoming presidential elections, two main candidates have emerged as frontrunners. Calin Georgescu, a far-right leader and NATO skeptic, gained traction in the first round of elections in December. Described as a pro-Russian ultranationalist, Georgescu remains a polarizing figure.
On the other side is Elena-Valerica Lasconi, a liberal leader of the Save Romania Union (USR). A former journalist and current mayor of Campulung, Lasconi represents the center-to-center-right political spectrum and is seen as a strong contender in the race.
The first round of Romania’s presidential elections is scheduled for May 4, with the second round expected to take place on May 18. CWEB will continue to monitor developments as Romania navigates this critical period of political transition.
