WHO urges governments to introduce tobacco-style controls for e-cigarettes, wants ban on flavored vapes

On Thursday, the World Health Organization urged governments across the world to ban flavored vapes. It wanted governments to introduce tobacco-style controls on e-cigarettes and vapes. The U.N. organization wants such substances to be controlled while major tobacco giants look at these products as a way to advance sales as cigarettes are losing sales. Many major tobacco companies are looking at alternatives, including vaping.

Although some researchers and campaigners see e-cigarettes or vapes as a way to reduce death as well as diseases caused by smoking regular cigarettes, the WHO believes that these products need to be controlled.

The WHO cited studies that noted that there wasn’t sufficient evidence to show that vapes were able to help smokers quit the habit. Studies also showed that vapes were harmful. Vapes could also bring about nicotine addiction in non-smokers.

The studies also showed that children and young people were using vapes as a result of aggressive marketing. The WHO also stated that more 13–15-year-olds were using vapes in WHO regions when compared with adults.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who is the Director-General of the WHO said, “Kids are being recruited and trapped at an early age to use e-cigarettes and may get hooked to nicotine.”

The WHO also said that long-term health risks from vapes have to be understood. It also said that vapes generated substances that were known to cause cancer and that offered risks to major organs, including the heart and lungs. Reports also indicate that vaping could affect the development of the brain in young people.

In July, the American Heart Association released a scientific statement that reported that the use of e-cigarettes was harmful to both the heart and the lungs.

The WHO can make recommendations, but it is left to the governments of countries around the world to implement these recommendations.
