Which IRS changes will there be in 2024? Your Paycheck is Affected

Your first paycheck for 2024 and beyond might be marginally higher than your 2023 paychecks, even if you received no wage increase.

The standard deduction and individual income bracket modifications, as well as other inflation-related changes to the tax code, were announced by the IRS. A monetary sum known as the standard deduction lowers the amount of taxable income.

Everything can be attributed to the federal government’s reforms (unless you received a raise of more than about 5.4% at the beginning of the year, which is also essentially the result of those adjustments.

These apply to tax returns we filed in 2025 and went into effect as we welcomed in 2024.

The standard tax deduction for individuals filing alone has increased from 2024 to $14,600, representing a $750 increase from 2023. The standard deduction for married couples filing jointly has risen to $29,200, an increase of $1,500 from the prior year.

Highlights of changes in Revenue Procedure 2022-38

The tax year 2023 adjustments described below generally apply to tax returns filed in 2024.

The tax items for the tax year 2023 of most significant interest to most taxpayers include the following dollar amounts:

  • The standard deduction for married couples filing jointly for tax year 2023 rises to $27,700, up $1,800 from the prior year. For single taxpayers and married individuals filing separately, the standard deduction increases to $13,850 for 2023, up $900, and for heads of households, the standard deduction will be $20,800 for tax year 2023, up $1,400 from the amount for tax year 2022.
  • Marginal Rates: For tax year 2023, the top tax rate remains 37% for individual single taxpayers with incomes greater than $578,125 ($693,750 for married couples filing jointly). The other rates are:
    • 35% for incomes over $231,250 ($462,500 for married couples filing jointly);
    • 32% for incomes over $182,100 ($364,200 for married couples filing jointly);
    • 24% for payments over $95,375 ($190,750 for married couples filing jointly);
    • 22% for amounts over $44,725 ($89,450 for married couples filing jointly);
    • 12% for amounts over $11,000 ($22,000 for married couples filing jointly).

The lowest rate is 10% for single individuals with incomes of $11,000 or less ($22,000 for married couples filing jointly).

For the wealthy: The Internal Revenue Service announced continued progress in expanding enforcement efforts related to high-income individuals, large corporations, and complex partnerships as part of broader efforts to transform the agency.

  • Prioritization of high-income cases: The IRS has ramped up efforts to pursue high-income, high-wealth individuals who have either not filed their taxes or failed to pay recognized tax debt, with dozens of revenue officers focused on these high-end collection cases. These efforts are concentrated among taxpayers with more than $1 million in income and more than $250,000 in recognized tax debt. In an initial success, the IRS collected $38 million from more than 175 high-income earners. Last fall, the IRS contacted about 1,600 new taxpayers in this category who owe hundreds of millions of dollars in taxes. The IRS has assigned over 900 of these 1,600 cases to revenue officers, with over $482 million collected. This brings the total recovered from millionaires through these new initiatives to $520 million.
  • Pursuing multi-million-dollar partnership balance sheet discrepancies: The IRS has identified ongoing discrepancies involving partnerships with over $10 million in assets, which indicates potential non-compliance. Taxpayers filing partnership returns show millions of dollars in differences between end-of-year balances and the beginning balances the following year. The number of these discrepancies has been increasing, with many taxpayers not attaching required statements explaining the difference. The IRS announced an initiative to address the balance sheet discrepancy in September and, as of the end of October, had sent 480 compliance alerts. Source IRS.gov
