Which airlines is the latest to add Elon Musk’s SpaceX Starlink? CWEB News

United Airlines (UAE) has hopped on the SpaceX Starlink bandwagon, becoming the latest airline to introduce the satellite-based Wi-Fi service across its regional fleet. The carrier has already rolled out Starlink on its first aircraft and has ambitious plans to equip all its two-cabin regional planes by the end of 2025. Starting in May 2024, United will install the technology on over 40 planes monthly.

This move pits United against other major airlines vying for high-end travelers, as it offers speedy internet at 30,000 feet. Currently, MileagePlus members can surf the web for $8 per flight, while non-members pay $10. However, United has hinted at making Wi-Fi free in the future, following in the footsteps of competitors like Delta and American Airlines, who are experimenting with complimentary connectivity to win over loyal customers.

Starlink, the brainchild of SpaceX founder Elon Musk, is taking the aviation world by storm. Airlines such as Hawaiian Airlines, Air France, Qatar Airways, and Japan’s Zipair have already signed on. With its constellation of low-orbit satellites, Starlink provides broadband-quality internet, closing connectivity gaps in remote regions and revolutionizing in-flight experiences.

For SpaceX, Starlink has become a cash cow, raking in $6.5 billion in yearly recurring revenue and doubling its user base in 2023. The service’s push into the aviation and maritime industries highlights its game-changing potential.

United’s adoption of Starlink signals a larger trend in air travel: the race to offer seamless, no-cost internet as a standard perk. As passengers increasingly expect to stay connected in the skies, Starlink’s expanding satellite network is cementing its place as a powerhouse in global communication—linking everything from rural communities to soaring jets.
