In “When Marnie Was There,” Studio Ghibli weaves a poignant narrative that captures the essence of friendship and self-discovery through the eyes of twelve-year-old Anna. She is inexplicably drawn to a mysterious house on the edge of the marshlands. Here, she meets Marnie, an exuberant young girl who appears as if from a dream. The two girls quickly form an inseparable bond.
One evening, Marnie implores Anna to keep their friendship a secret, uttering the poignant words, “Promise me something – that we’ll remain a secret, forever.” This plea ignites a spark of curiosity in Anna, driving her to unravel the mysteries surrounding her enigmatic friend. As Anna delves deeper into Marnie’s world, she embarks on self-discovery, learning valuable lessons about family, friendship, and kindness.
