The Federal Bureau of Investigation has disclosed documents new information about the 64-year-old gambler Stephen Paddock who killed 58 concertgoers at the Route 91 Harvest music festival in Las Vegas on October 1, 2017, and injured hundreds more.
A more complete picture of the shooter’s compulsive gambling behaviors is also provided by the highly redacted documents, which also include hundreds of pages of investigation records, evidence inventories, and interviews with individuals who knew Paddock. A near thorough account of the gunman’s gambling habits also cast new light on the thoughts that were going through his head just before the attack.
The papers, however, do not provide an explanation for the enduring question of why Stephen Paddock committed the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history, reports say. Paddock committed suicide before being found.
According to documents, Paddock wagered hundreds of thousands of dollars at MGM Resorts properties and other Las Vegas casinos in the ten years prior to the shooting. He had a reputation for playing hours-long games of video poker. According to a casino record, for instance, he wagered more than $945,000 in 2006 and made a profit of about $4,300 by winning slightly more than he lost.

There was “no clear single motivating factor” for why Paddock opened fire on a country music festival from his 32nd-floor suite at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, according to a yearlong investigation by a panel assembled by the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit. The panel stated in its 2019 report that there was no evidence he was driven by resentment towards “any specific casino, hotel, or institution in Las Vegas.”
A fellow gambler who was questioned by investigators after the attack claimed that Paddock had grown enraged about how casinos generally treated VIP players, despite the FBI’s 2019 assertion that Paddock’s actions were not motivated by a grievance against any specific casino or hotel. According to the documents, the gambler, whose name has been redacted, told the FBI that Paddock was “upset at the way casinos were treating him and other high rollers,” and that he thought the irritation may have led the shooter to “snap.”
According to Russell Palarea, CEO of the threat-assessment company Operational Psychology Services, the documents help to comprehend Paddock but do not give away his specific motivation. He claimed that Paddock’s request for a hotel room with a view of the outdoor Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago that summer was evidence that his rage was not restricted to casinos or Las Vegas.
