“What Comes Around” dives deep into the precarious nature of online relationships through the story of Anna, portrayed by Grace Van Dien. The film starts with Anna’s burgeoning online friendship with Eric, a boy she meets online.

Their discussions revolve around their mutual appreciation for Emily Dickinson, creating a bond that feels both intellectual and intimate. However, Anna’s confession to her friend Brit about Eric being older hints at the underlying tension in their relationship.

The narrative takes a significant turn as Anna’s 17th birthday approaches. The dynamics of Anna’s family life, including her mother Beth (played by Summer Phoenix) getting engaged to Tim, a police officer, provide a backdrop to the unfolding drama.

The normalcy of birthday celebrations is disrupted when Eric FaceTimes Anna and reveals he’s right outside her house. The suddenness of this move leaves Anna visibly unnerved, yet she decides to meet him.

Eric presents Anna with a collection of Emily Dickinson’s poems, a thoughtful and disquieting gesture. The note inside, stating that the poems remind him of her, adds a layer of personal connection that makes Anna decide to give him a chance.

Their walk in the park becomes a pivotal moment where Eric confesses that he is actually 28 years old, admitting he lied about his age out of nervousness. This revelation complicates their relationship further, leaving Anna and the audience to grapple with the implications of their age difference.

Bobby Bukowski’s cinematography beautifully captures the delicate and often tense interactions between Anna and Eric, while Emilie Mahdavian’s editing maintains a gripping pace that keeps viewers on edge.
