Movie Review: “We Were Dangerous”
In the hauntingly beautiful yet oppressive landscape of 1950s New Zealand, *We Were Nowhere* tells the gripping tale of Nellie and Daisy, two spirited girls who attempt to escape an institution for delinquents.
Their initial bid for freedom ends in capture, leading to their relocation to an even more isolated facility on a remote island. Here, their dynamic shifts with the arrival of Lou, a well-to-do girl whose presence adds complexity to their rebellious plans.
The film is a compelling study of friendship and defiance under the watchful eye of the devout and stern Matron, played with chilling authority by Rima Te Wiata. As the trio navigates life on the island, they struggle against a system that seeks to reform them through harsh and experimental punishments administered in the dead of night.
The bond between Nellie, Daisy, and Lou, portrayed by Erana James, Nathalie Morris, and Manaia Hall, respectively, becomes their sanctuary amidst the oppressive regime.
