President Joe Biden was received with “We love you, Joe” chants when he delivered a keynote address on the first day of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Biden also received a standing ovation that lasted more than four minutes. He listed his and Vice President Kamala Harris’ achievements these past four years and more and reiterated his love for the nation. Other speakers included Hillary Clinton and Jesse Jackson, and Kamala Harris made a surprise visit.
President Joe Biden received a warm welcome from his party weeks after honorably stepping down as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee. In his almost hour-long speech, he spoke of how he, Kamala Harris, and his administration could be credited with saving democracy in the US and offered warm words of encouragement for Kamala Harris.
President Biden said, “America, I gave my best to you. For 50 years, like many of you, I’ve given my heart and soul to our nation, and I’ve been blessed a million times in return with the support of the American people.”
Earlier in the night, Hillary Clinton gave an emotional speech. She spoke of how Americans could create history by voting for Kamala Harris, saying that “the future is here” and more.
Presidential nominee for the Democrats and current Vice President Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance on stage and thanked President Biden for his “lifetime of service to our nation” and more.
Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr. was also honored at the convention. He appeared on stage in a wheelchair.
Speakers at the Democratic National Committee also focused on abortion rights and civil rights. Many of them, including labor leaders, condemned former President Donald Trump for his past and present actions, in and out of office.
Some of the leading speakers on Day 2 of the Democratic National Convention will discuss the future of the Democratic Party. They will include former First Lady Michelle Obama, President Barack Obama, governors, senators, and second gentleman Doug Emhoff.
