Air New Zealand has begun weighing passengers at Auckland airport before they depart on international flights. The reason for doing so is to conduct a survey to find out the average weight of a passenger. This survey could improve fuel efficiency in future as well as help other airlines around the world. Participation is voluntary.
Earlier, Air New Zealand had conducted a similar survey on domestic flights. As international flights have opened and flourished after the pandemic, the airlines decided to conduct a similar survey with international passengers.
Airline spokesman Alistair James explained the need for such a survey in a video. He said that it was a “regulatory requirement” to know the weight of everything that went aboard on its aircraft. This includes baggage weight, passengers’ weights, weight of meals, weight of cargo and more.

James also further reassured passengers that although it may seem daunting to passengers there would be no “visible display anywhere.” He added that the weighing in on scales separate from the baggage ones would help them “fly safely and efficiently every time.”
Air New Zealand has 104 operating airplanes. It is the national carrier. The survey started on May 29 and will continue till June 2, on certain flights operating at Auckland International Airport. It hopes to survey 10,000 passengers that will help pilots understand “overall weight and balance” of the aircraft before it flies in the sky.
All airlines implement a maximum weight that is permitted in flights for carryon baggage as well as checked bags. They take into account the number of passengers in a flight as well as the amount of food and beverages onboard. They also calculate the amount of fuel needed to reach the flight’s destination.
To date, no airline has reported weighing in passengers. Air New Zealand, with its voluntary survey of passengers’ weights, could contribute to providing essential data for flights across the world.
