On Friday, The City of Memphis released video footage that covers the deadly altercation between Tyre Nichols and Memphis police officers earlier this month. Three days after the incident, Nichols, who worked at the FedEx parcel delivery firm, succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.
Three videos from body cameras and one from an overhead camera were among the materials made public on the city’s Vimeo site. The footage shows Tyre Nichols being punched and kicked by policemen. Nichols is seen crying out for his mother repeatedly and begging to go home. US President Joe Biden described the “horrific” video as “deeply painful.”
The department has fired the five officers who took part in the arrest after an internal investigation. They now face criminal charges, including second-degree murder. Two deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office have been suspended pending an investigation following the release of the video, according to Sheriff Floyd Bonner Jr. Both Nichols and the five officers accused in the case are Black.
The incident is shown on video to have started at 8:24 p.m. CT when officers first stopped Nichols. Officers ordered him to lie flat, despite his protests that he had done nothing and was going home.

A shocked Nichols quickly runs away as he sees a Taser in the hands of one of the officers getting ready to shoot him.
Officers caught up with him and are seen beating Nichols in a different video. The CCTV footage captures Memphis police hitting Nichols what looked like an expandable baton continuously without any discernible reason. The officers then drag him and prop him against a squad car. About twenty minutes later, an ambulance is seen arriving.
The five officers, Justin Smith, Demetrius Haley, Desmond Mills Jr., Tadarrius Bean, and Emmitt Martin III were fired last week. The legal team for the Nichols family compared the incident to the notorious police beating of Los Angeles driver Rodney King in 1991.
President Joe Biden released a statement, expressing grief and outrage. He, along with First Lady, offered condolences to the family of Nichols and the entire community of Memphis.
“As Americans grieve, the Department of Justice conducts its investigation, and state authorities continue their work, I join Tyre’s family in calling for peaceful protest,” he said. The president continued saying that “outrage is understandable, but violence is never acceptable.” He also stated that to establish real change, there needs to be “accountability when law enforcement officers violate their oaths.” Mr. President revealed that he has also signed “an executive order” an order for “stricter use of force standards and accountability provisions for federal law enforcement.”
Cerelyn Davis, the director of the Memphis Police Department, told US media that local officials had chosen to release the video on Friday evening to give schoolchildren and commuters enough time to get home because protests were expected.
