A video showing a 7-year-old Indianapolis Public Schools student being subjected to systematic abuse at the hands of his teacher and classmates has shocked the nation. Just weeks into the school year, the young boy with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), identified as O.D., confided in his mother about the horrors he endured in his classroom at George Washington Carver Montessori IPS School 87. He said he had been “attacked, bullied, threatened, and injured in the classroom.”
In the video, a student mercilessly pummels O.D. while Johnican callously encourages the violence, betraying the trust and safety expected within the confines of a classroom. His mother’s pleas for intervention allegedly fell on deaf ears until a video surfaced depicting a “fight club-style” scenario orchestrated by his teacher, Julius Johnican.
The lawsuit filed in Marion Superior Court by O.D.’s mother highlights the neglect and abuse suffered by her son. It reveals a disturbing pattern of violence, deliberate humiliation, and unchecked aggression within the school premises. Even more distressing is the revelation that other school personnel, including Principal Mary Kapcoe, vice-principal Finae Rent, and substitute teacher Dahliwal, allegedly turned a blind eye to the abuse.
Despite O.D.’s special needs and designation under a Section 504 plan, which mandates heightened supervision and safety measures, the school failed him egregiously. Administrators dismissed the mother’s concerns, with Johnican labeling the boy as “lying and mentally ill,” further perpetuating the trauma inflicted upon him.
The emotional toll on O.D. is huge, with the relentless abuse leading to profound psychological trauma, anxiety, and depression. The mother wants a jury trial for justice and has also asked for an unspecified sum of money.
