On Thursday morning, a rare yet frightening incident occurred after a wheel from a United Airlines jet fell off and crashed into a few cars in an employee parking lot, causing colossal damage. No humans were injured. The incident occurred at San Francisco International Airport seconds after the jet took off. The flight was diverted to Los Angeles airport and landed safely. A federal investigation has begun.
United Flight 35 took off from SFO to Osaka, Japan, at approximately 11.35 a.m. but faced a wheel falling incident that led to a diversion to LAX, and it landed safely. The San Francisco International Airport’s runway was shut while the crew cleared the debris. It reopened later, and flights continued to take off and land on the runways.
The airline said the plane contained 249 people, including 235 customers and 10 flight attendants. There were four pilots in the airplane.
United said it will work with customers and the owners of the damaged vehicles and address their needs.
Reports say that the airplane was acquired by United from Boeing more than two decades ago. The airline said that the plane was a 777-200.
United said the plane had been “designed to land safely with missing or damaged tires.” The airline also thanked its crew for professionally managing the incident and the ground staff below.
Aviation experts have said that a plane losing a tire is not a common issue, nor is it a large safety issue, and other tires present can handle the load on the airplane. It could be a maintenance issue rather than a manufacturing issue.
It will take weeks for the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to determine the cause of the wheel being detached from the plane.
