On Monday in New York City, a man driving a U-Haul truck swerved onto sidewalks and struck scooter riders, injuring several people before police were able to pin the careening vehicle against a building after a long pursuit.

After mowing down eight people in Brooklyn, 62-year-old Weng Sor is currently in custody. He began his rampage at 10.50 in Bay Ridge and finished just before 11.30 in Red Hook, where police eventually apprehended him. According to the New York Post, Sor could be of unsound mind and demanded that police shoot him while they chased him and told them he “wanted to die” after being taken into custody.

Two of the eight injured people are reportedly in critical condition. Although there was no proof of “terrorism involvement,” Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell called the driver’s actions a “violent rampage through Brooklyn.”
According to authorities, the truck sped through Brooklyn’s Bay Ridge neighborhood before being stopped by police more than three miles away, close to the entrance to a tunnel connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan. Uncertainty surrounds the ’emotionally disturbed’ man’s motivation, but according to police sources, he ‘wanted to kill his enemies.’

According to court records, Weng Sor was given a prison term of between one and three years in Nevada for stabbing his brother in Las Vegas in 2015.
Police stated that the first report of a truck colliding with bicyclists and pedestrians came in at 10:30 a.m. Additional reports came in as the truck traveled through a congested area of Brooklyn.

A witness claimed to have witnessed a U-Haul driving through a red light, striking an e-bike delivery man in the middle of the street, and dragging him a short distance.
The truck was captured on security camera footage clipping a scooter before veering onto a sidewalk and almost colliding with a pedestrian, who dove for cover just in time. The truck was then followed by a police patrol car down the sidewalk at high speed. After the chase came to an end, the truck could be seen on a sidewalk with a police cruiser in its way.
The NYPD is investigating, while the suspect remains in custody.
