Oregon-based divers found the body of California teenager Kiely Rodni and her car submerged in a reservoir last month, after she was reported missing. The lead investigator of the search team says he suspects foul play. Doug Bishop of Adventures With Purpose (AWP), who discovered the body of California adolescent Kiely Rodni in the flooded back cargo hatch of her car, has reiterated his assertions that he thinks her death was strange. Scuba instructor Nick Rinn, who was also a part of the search, reportedly has similar feelings.
Bishop claimed Rodni would have needed to make a sharp left turn onto a dirt lane approximately a quarter mile off the main road in order for her car to end up where it did. Bishop further noted that despite the rear driver’s side window being partially down and the passenger window being open, her body was discovered in the vehicle’s cargo hatch.
Rodni, who was reportedly attending a party at a campground near Tahoe National Forest, was last seen on August 6. She had texted her mother that she would be home in 45 minutes at 11:30 p.m. Her phone rang one final time at 12:33 in the morning, after which she and her silver Honda CRV disappeared.
In an extensive search that involved 18 agencies and more than 19,000 man-hours to find Rodni, authorities used boats with sonar, divers, and helicopters. Two weeks passed without any leads and investigators started looking into Rodni’s disappearance as a probable kidnapping because of the mysterious circumstances surrounding it.
Civilian dive team, Adventures with Purpose, which operates primarily out of public donations, located Rodni and the car using sonar technology. Though witnesses claimed she had consumed alcohol that evening, Bishop feels her death was not an accident, she was familiar with the neighborhood and would not have unintentionally fallen into the reservoir. According to him, she could have climbed through either of the two windows easily and there was no reason for her to scramble over the row of backseats into the cramped space of the hatch. It was also established that she was not wearing a seatbelt.
Bishop’s theory was refuted by nonprofit Sonar Search and Recovery’s Tammy Watters. Meanwhile, the investigation is ongoing, and police say they are awaiting the results of a full autopsy with toxicology findings, but they have confirmed that the remains are those of Kiely.
