June 6 is a special day around the world, and in Normandy, it commemorates D-Day. The sun rose bright as veterans gathered along the beach/coast of Normandy. President Biden, First Lady Jill Biden, and other world leaders were present later in the day to honor World War II veterans, many of whom returned to France to attend the event. The 80th D-Day celebrations celebrate freedom and the sacrifices made by veterans.
US President Joe Biden told the veterans, “On behalf of the American people and as commander in chief, it’s the highest honor to be able to salute you here in Normandy” and more.
Biden also said, “In their generation, in their hour of trial, the Allied forces of D-Day did their duty. Now the question for us is, will we do ours in our hour of trial?”
French President Emmanuel Macron also addressed the veterans and said, “Here you came to join our efforts with your soldiers and to make France a free nation. And you are back here today—at home, if I may say.”
Macron also presented some veterans with France’s highest decoration, the Legion of Honor. The crowd broke into applause as he pinned the medals on their jackets.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told the veterans, “You saved the world. Gentlemen, we salute you.”
World War II veterans from the US, Canada, and Great Britain traveled to Normandy to mark the 80th anniversary of troops landing at Omaha Beach. These veterans helped defeat Hitler and end the Second World War with a victory for the Allies.
There is a cemetery and its memorial inland on the shore of Omaha Beach. Many military veterans who lost their lives in the war have been buried here. More than 150,000 U.S. and Allied troops reached the shore along Normandy, turning the tide in the Allies’ favor.
