A shoplifter who repeatedly stole lighter fluid was confronted by a store clerk, in San Francisco. The shoplifter splashed lighter fluid on the clerk and lit the fire. The clerk suffered second- and third-degree burns. A homeless person from El Sobrante has been arrested by the Sheriff’s office and is facing multiple charges. He has been denied bail. The moment a man poured lighter fluid on a worker has been captured on surveillance video.
According to a report on CBS News Bay Area the clerk, who has simply been identified by his first name Suraj for safety reasons, has been hospitalized for more than a week. He is suffering from second and third degree burns in different parts of his body including face, neck, shoulder and chest.
Suraj told the outlet that he was working at Appian Food and Liquor in El Sobrante. He said that although he had worked for almost five years in the store, he had never encountered a shoplifter like this.
He said that on the fateful day, a co-worker alerted him that there was a repeat shoplifter who was stealing lighter fluid. Suraj made an attempt to stop him, while his coworker reached for a bat. Suddenly he was splashed with lighter fluid on his face, and it was lit by the shoplifter.
Suraj said that he was scared and ran to the restroom and “splashed water on his face.” He said he didn’t remember much as he had been scared.
The store clerk said that his recovery will take a long time and that he has to undergo multiple surgeries. His wife Sabina Parajuli has opened a fundraising page online as they needed funds to pay his medical bills.
The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office said that a 38-year-old suspect had been arrested. The deputies arrested Kendall Burton, a homeless person who lives in El Sobrante.
Burton faces charges including assault with a deadly weapon and battery as well as arson and robbery. He has been denied bail.
