A French serial killer known as The Serpent, who was convicted of several tourist murders in Asia in the 1970s, has left Nepal after being released from prison. 78-year-old Charles Sobhraj was released after a court found him not guilty due to his age and good behavior. He was imprisoned in Nepal for 19 years for the 1975 murder of two individuals.
According to his attorney, confessed French serial killer Charles Sobhraj was released from prison in Nepal on Friday after serving the majority of his sentence for killing American and Canadian backpackers, Connie Jo Bronzich and Laurent Carriere. He had been convicted in two separate trials, the most recent in 2014, when he was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Carriere.
On Friday, he was deported to France and reportedly barred from returning to Nepal for at least ten years. Sobhraj was driven out of Kathmandu’s Central Jail in a heavily guarded police convoy to the Department of Immigration earlier Friday.
The Supreme Court ordered Sobhraj’s release because of his poor health, good behavior, and had served more than 75% of his sentence, making him eligible for release. Sobhraj is said to have heart disease. According to Agence France-Presse, Sobhraj was taken to immigration detention and then to Kathmandu airport for deportation to France.
According to attorney Gopal Siwakoti Chitan, a ticket was purchased with money borrowed from a friend, and the French Embassy in Kathmandu prepared the necessary travel documents, allowing him to board the flight Friday evening.
In Nepal, life sentences are for 20 years. The order also stated that he had 15 days to leave the country. Sobhraj has previously admitted to killing several Western tourists. During the 1970s, he is believed to have killed at least 20 people in Afghanistan, India, Thailand, Turkey, Nepal, Iran, and Hong Kong. His conviction in Nepal in 2004 was his first in a court of law.
Sobhraj was previously held for two decades in New Delhi’s maximum-security Tihar prison on suspicion of theft before being deported to France without charge in 1997. He reappeared in Kathmandu in September 2003. The Serpent is his nickname because of his reputation as a disguise and escape artist.
