Alex Murdaugh’s lawyers, Attorneys Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin appealed the double-murder conviction today. No arguments are presented in the initial filing, a notice of appeal to the South Carolina Court of Appeals.
According to the document, they plan to challenge Murdaugh’s convictions for the murders of his wife, Maggie, and his youngest son, Paul, on June 7, 2021, as well as the two life sentences imposed by Judge Clifton Newman.
Both attorneys expressed the opinion that the jury should not have been able to hear any of the financial offenses Judge Newman admitted as evidence.

Murdaugh was found guilty on March 3 and was given two consecutive life sentences. The jury deliberated for six weeks before returning a guilty judgment that sentenced Murdaugh to life in prison. During that time, they heard testimony from 76 witnesses. One day following his conviction, he was given two consecutive life sentences.
According to the authorities, Maggie Murdaugh, 52, was hit by four or five rounds from a rifle, while Paul Murdaugh, 22, was shot twice with a shotgun. On Murdaugh’s vast rural property, a crime scene report indicated that both victims were shot in the head after being originally hurt close to the dog kennels on the property.
