On Saturday night, fighting broke out between rival Eritrean groups in The Hague. Four police officers were injured when migrants from rival factions fought among themselves outside a community meeting. Pro-government Eritreans were meeting at the Opera business center. It was described as a New Year party by the center. However, opponents of the regime turned up at the venue, resulting in rioting and chaos.
According to Dutch News, local police chief Marielle van Vulpen told broadcaster NOS, “Our colleagues were confronted with severe violence which erupted out of nothing. The chief added, “This is unacceptable.”
NL Times was told that some rioters carried sticks, bricks, signs, and more. Some threw paving stones. Members of the Eritrean groups set vehicles on fire, including a police car. A coach was set ablaze. Some of the rioters were making Molotov cocktails after filling bottles with petrol obtained from a nearby petrol station.
The center and some houses in the neighborhood faced destruction as rioters broke windows and smashed concrete flower pots. There were a lot of stones and broken glass on the road.
City mayor Jan van Zanen said that the rioting was “disgusting and unacceptable.” He gave the police permission to use tear gas. He also stated that they were aware of the tensions with the Eritrean community, and the event had an upgrade in security as they were aware of unrest from young members of Brigade Nhamedu.
The Brigade Nhamedu was formed in 2022. It operates across Western countries such as Sweden, the U.S., and Canada and is said to cause trouble at similar events held in these countries.
Unrest and violence during Eritrean festivals also took place in Stuttgart in September 2023 and a few months earlier in Giessen in Germany.
Reports say that several people have been arrested, and investigations are ongoing.
